Starkbier = Strong Beer. If you love beer, you will love this Doppelbock festival. And the best part? It is almost unknown to outsiders! Centered on Munich and Bamberg - classic favorites of beer connoisseurs - only the best beer destinations make the cut. It's typically less expensive to fly to Europe and the hotel prices are at normal levels. Known by locals as the 'fifth season', this centuries' old festival harkens to the Paulaner monks who brewed an extra-strong beer to sustain themselves throughout the fasting period of Lent. On the third Thursday following Ash Wednesday, the first barrel of Salvator is tapped at Paulaner am Nockherberg amidst great celebrations. Local beer halls like the Augustiner Keller, Paulaner, Löwenbräu lay on special dances, parties and other events during the ensuing three-week period.
Day 1

The efficient Munich transit system will whisk us straight downtown without traffic delays. After checking in, we will catch lunch at a traditional Munich Beerhall - perhaps Augustiner or the famous Hofbräuhaus! We'll spend the afternoon will a detailed historical walking tour, but with lots of refreshment stops. After a hearty German dinner, we'll send you off to bed a little earlier than normal so you can rest up for the big day tomorrow!
Day 2
22
Mar 2025
Enjoy a traditional German breakfast before we explore Munich. During our walking tour, you'll experience the history of Munich's old town and see the main sites of the city: The Glockenspiel at Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, Old Peter, The open air market, Viktulaienmarkt, and some of the major sites of Munich's dark WWII history. At 2:00 we join the party at the famous Paulaner am Nockherberg. This is the classic location for Starkbierfest! It's starts calmly enough, but ends up in doppelbock inspired craziness!
Day 3
23
Mar 2025
We board the fast and sleek ICE train to a 70 minute ride to Nuremberg. After stowing our gear in a few lockers at the train station, we head out to explore the city. To English speakers, "Nuremberg" invokes dark thoughts of Nazi Party Rallies, Race Laws, and trials. However, Nuremberg has a rich imperial history from the Middle Ages. The large castle from the Holy Roman Empire rules the Nuremberg skyline and the sandstone architecture reveals a time when Nuremberg was a wealthy trading city. We will visit the Party Rally grounds, the Castle and Old town, and try the local "Rotbier" and grilled sausages! In the evening, we collect our luggage and ride the last 50 minutes to Bamberg we were will check into and sleep in a real functioning brewery!
Day 4
24
Mar 2025
Choose 1 of 2 options today 1: Storybook City: After we awake and have a quick breakfast and head to the quaint, medieval village of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Completely encircled with a town wall, you'll learn the history of this village on an important trade route, visit the famous Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Store, see the famous Tilman Riemenscheider Blood Altar, and have a great Franconian lunch with hand-crafted local wine. In the late afternoon, we'll catch the train back to Bamberg, and spend the evening enjoying this baroque city. 2: Beer Lovers: Take a tour of the Weyermann Malt Factory which supplies breweries around the world with their specialty malts. It's a fascinating look behind the scenes into the soul of your beer. Afterwards, we have lunch at Cafe Abseits which has a wide range of specialty beers from all over Franconia. In the afternoon, we take a tour of the storied Schlenkerla brewery. Look behind the curtain and discover the secret to the smokiness of the famous Rauchbier.
Day 5
25
Mar 2025
Awake to the smell of Fässla's fresh beer - they're brewing right downstairs and the malty goodness wafts up to your room, gently waking you! Have breakfast and even enjoy a morning beer if you like! We'll take a quick tour of this small brewery before we take a long walk through this beautiful, baroque city. We visit the Bamberg Cathedral and its famous "Bamberg Knight" and Cathedral Square before visiting the heart of the city. Virtually untouched in WWII, Bamberg maintains its status as an UNESCO World Heritage City. As the tour progress, we’ll make several stops at some of Bamberg’s most cherished breweries: Mahr's , Keesman, Spezial, Greifenklau, Klosterbraeu, and Ambräusianum . This evening's dinner features the famous Bamberg Stuffed Onion at Schlenkerla. Enjoy with Bamberg's world famous Rauchbier for a culinary treat! For the beer aficionado, this is a banner day!
Day 6
26
Mar 2025
Another fast train back to Munich and then we'll secure our luggage and make the pilgrimage to the "Holy Mountain" is today's activity. Many Bavarians say that if you had just one day to experience Bavaria, you should spend it at Kloster Andechs. This historical site, still run by Benedictine Monks, offers art, architecture, and spiritual refreshment. The Bräustuberl offers more earthly refreshments - the Doppelbock beer is world-famous and many come from miles around to eat the Schweinehaxe. Its hard to explain why Andechs is so special, but you are sure to agree that it is a very special place.
Day 7
27
Mar 2025
The city of Mozart beckons for a visit! 2 hours away on the train, we'll show you some of the locations from the Sound of Music as well as Mirabell Palace and the Old Town. On top of the history, Salzburg offers great food and drink: Join me at Sporer for some homemade Schnapps, Fürst for the best Mozart Balls, or the Hotel Sacher for torte and coffee. For dinner, we'll enjoy a wonderful beer hall, the Augustiner Bräustübl zu Mülln - grab a stein off the shelf, rinse it out yourself and have it filled with fresh beer - an authentic experience! Then, grab a six pack for the train ride back to Munich!
Day 8
28
Mar 2025
We'll let the weather dictate our schedule for the morning - a walk through the Palace grounds of Nymphenburg or a short train ride down to the mountains for instance. In the evening, we enjoy the music and beer at the Augustiner Keller. It's a great celebration punctuated with every Municher's favorite beer! NOTE: We may change this day based on special events in the Munich area or, if weather allows, a possible boat trip to Kloster Weltenburg
Day 9
29
Mar 2025
This morning enjoy an extended tour of Munich's history or opt in for a guided tour of the Dachau Concentration Camp with a friend of mine (extra charge). In the evening, we visit the most traditional (and my personal favorite!) of the Starkbierfest celebrations in Munich at the Löwenbräu Keller. This one attracts a somewhat more upscale crowd - there's always a great band and the seating arrangement makes for a very comfortable environment as you enjoy the music and Triumphator beer.
Day 10
30
Mar 2025
Morning departure for Munich airport. We will assist you in reaching the airport in time for your flight (MVV Ticket not included). Join in for that last Weisswurst and Weissbier at the Airbräu - right at the airport. (I love this country!) If you leave a little later, we can hit the Weisses Brauhaus one last time... Also, feel free to ask me about extending your stay in Munich and we'll help you book a tour to the Royal Castle of Neuschwanstein.

Oktoberfest in Bavaria

We offer small, personalized tours and guide you through the intricacies of visiting Munich's world famous Oktoberfest. Our tour shows you the traditional side of Oktoberfest - all the charm and details that have made this festival famous.  Since we've been doing this for years, we have reserved tables in the Beer Tents! With us, you are guaranteed a seat with your companions!

Oktoberfest is the most famous celebration of beer, but it began as a wedding celebration for Ludwig I in 1810 and marked the first time that the Royal family invited the commoners along to the party. Each of Munich six breweries are represented at the Festival with a "Tent." These tents are enormous structures than can hold up to 10,000 people at a time. At the center is an elevated stage where the band plays. They are surrounded by tables where the guests sit and each tent offers excellent food - Roasted Chicken, Pig Knuckle, and Ox are the favored treats. The guests pass the time drinking, eating, and dancing on the benches. Outside the beer tents there is much to be seen. A large carnival with rides surround the beer tents. Many, many people are attired in the traditional Bavarian Garb - Lederhosen for the men and a Dirndl dress for the ladies. It's a wonderful atmosphere, full of fun. So, join us for the Munich Oktoberfest!

Insider Tip: Consider coming for Starkbierfest. The airfare is cheaper, the hotel rooms are cheaper, and so is the beer. It's even more traditional than the Munich Oktoberfest and isn't as crowded. See my page here for details!
