Wurstfest 2011

Over 20 BayernTrips Alumni gathered in New Braunfels, Texas at the annual Wurstfest Celebration. Here's what happened...

Wurtsfest is a massive festival boasting three stages with virtually non-stop entertainment. It’s all German-style, but with a Texas twist!

After meeting up with 2 friends from California, 2 from New Jersey, 1 from Seattle, and 1 from New Jersey we drove up to New Braunfels and met up at the Friesenhaus, an authentic German run Restaurant and bakery in downtown New Braunfels. It was a ton of fun to see so many of our Texas friends – altogether we were 20! I got to tap a keg of Hofbräu Orginal and we all helped the band teach the “Fliegerlied” to the crowd. After dinner we adjourned to the back deck of our rental home at the Schlitterbahn resort for a round of Bergfeuer schnapps from Berchtesgaden and Kilepitsch from Düsseldorf.

The next morning came much too early and we all were dragging a bit as we went to the fest grounds. We camped out in the “Big Tent,” which is one of 4 different stages of entertainment. The music is a huge attraction and we heard the Comal County Band, Terry Cavanaugh and the Alpine Express, the Höhberg Buam all the way from Austria, and Squeezebox. They were all great, but no one compares to the energy that Alex Meixner brings to the stage. I have heard a lot of German Bands, but what Alex does is quite unique – if you ever get a chance to see him, it’s a definite must!

The rest of the fest is also a lot of fun. They have lots and lots of food booths with various sausages, potato pancakes, Schnitzel Sandwiches, and all kinds of crazy things like Frito Pie and Deep-fried Oreos. Vonia and I passed out lots of coasters and brochures as we walked through the various venues and beer gardens.

It was a great chance to catch up with our many friends – in fact, there are some rumblings about an Alumni Only Christmas trip during the first week of December 2012. Mark your calendar for that trip in 2012, plus Nov 2 – 4, 2012 to see us at Wurstfest!
