Oktoberfest 2023 Motif selected!

Oktoberfest: Red heart, Ferris wheel, beer mug, & pretzel sums up fun at the Wiesn!

Since 1952 the city of Munich has held a competition to choose the year’s Oktoberfest Motiv. The winner now receives €2,500 and the bragging rights of seeing his/Her design on Beer Steins, T-Shirts, coffee cups and hundreds of other items. Personally, I love this design – my favorite one since 2016. The two figures might not be recognizable to non-Bavarians. The figure on the right, with the wings and red hat, is the angel Aloisius. Born and bred in Munich, he dies and discovers that in heaven there is no beer. Every Bavarian knows this cartoon from 1911 which was later turned into a short animated film: youtu.be/VvdEgkqei6c The second figure is the Munich child. This is a monk, clad in the Munich colors of black and gold. This image can be found all over the city of Munich – atop the Rathaus, on the side of streetcars and even on manhole covers! After two years of pandemic cancellations, it’s not entirely certain that Oktoberfest 2022 will proceed, but we are all hopeful. In fact, the tents are actively processing reservations and things are rolling forward, so all signs are positive at this point! After a two year hiatus, 2022’s Wiesn promises to be an epic celebration!
