Hotels: In Füssen we primarily use Hotel Ruchti. Located in the spa district of Füssen, Bad Faulenbach, Hotel Ruchti is situated in a quiet neighborhood with very little traffic. The area is known for its beautiful lakes and alpine walking possibilities. In Munich, we use Hotel am Viktualienmarkt, Hotel am Markt, and Hotel Lux all located in the heart of Munich. All have private bathrooms, though the rooms can be small and the surrounding area prone to street noise. Just a short way from downtown, we use the Hotel St. Paul which is in a quieter neighborhood. We also use Hotel Alter Wirt, an organic hotel, which is located in the exclusive suburb of Grünwald. The location is much more peaceful and still only 25 minutes from downtown Munich with a convenient streetcar connection. Like most hotels in Germany, none of these hotels offer air conditioning.
Availability & Booking: We cannot accept any reservations from mid-September through December. Otherwise, send an email with the legal name of each traveler, mailing address, and desired arrival date. Within 48 hours, we will confirm your reservation and let you know which hotel we have booked on your behalf. At that point, we will send you a contract and ask for full payment.
Sample Itinerary
Day 1: Land at Munich (MUC) Airport mid-morning. Your guide will meet you outside customs and accompany you to downtown Munich on the train. Once there, you’ll check your luggage and have lunch at a traditional Munich beer garden. Over lunch, your guide will go over your itinerary with you to cover any last minutes changes or questions you may have. After lunch, you’ll be escorted back to the train station and ride two hours down to the small city of Füssen. Since the train ends here Füssen, you have plenty of time to gather your belongings and take a taxi to Hotel Ruchti. When you check in at the Hotel, the staff will confirm a dinner reservation for you and give you your tickets for your castle tour tomorrow. Feast on Ruchti’s signature Wiener Schnitzel and enjoy your evening in this peaceful spa district surrounded by the Alps.
Day 2: Wake up and go for a walk in the fresh Alpine air before enjoying a hearty German breakfast. After breakfast, the staff will arrange for a taxi to take you to the castles. You’ll be on the first tour of the day so that you can beat the crowd. You will first visit Hohenschwangau. Rebuilt in the 1830’s by King Maximillian II, Ludwig II spent a great deal of his childhood here. It was from this vantage point that he oversaw the construction of his fairy tale castle, Neuschwanstein. After touring Neuschwanstein, return to Füssen to enjoy the old town and do some souvenir shopping before enjoying another scrumptious dinner at Hotel Ruchti.
Day 3: After breakfast at the Hotel, you’ll check out and take a taxi to the Füssen station for the 10:06 AM train. This direct train will have you back in Munich at 12:05. Your guide will meet you at that platform and escort you to your Munich hotel, Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. After checking in, you’ll enjoy lunch in Munich’s open air market, Viktualienmarkt. In the afternoon, you’ll be treated to a tour of Munich’s old town and, after consulting with you, will arrange dinner for you in the evening. Cap off the day’s events with a beer at the famous Hofbräuhaus.
Day 4: After enjoying a leisurely breakfast at your hotel, your guide will help you set-up your plans for the day according to your personal interests. Are you interested in Munich’s WWII history, the time of the Wittelsbach kings, Munich’s many art museums, the BMW museum, the site of the 1972 Olympics, or the Science Museum? Or , if the weather is nice, perhaps a bike ride or stroll through the Englischer Garten or along the Isar? You will have discussed these many options in advance with your guide and he will help you find just the thing that is right for you. In the evening, you’ll meet back with your guide to discuss the events of the day and make your plans for tomorrow.
Day 5: Much like Day 4, you get to plan something just for you. Perhaps you would like to go a bit further afield: A day trip to Salzburg, the Starnberger See, Kloster Andechs, Nuremberg, Bad Tölz, or a day at the spa in Erding? Your expert guide will have discussed your interests in advance and will steer you in exactly the right direction. In the evening, you’ll meet back with your guide to discuss your departure plans for tomorrow.
Day 6: Departure Day. Sadly, it’s time to go and your guide has given you your transportation tickets back to the airport and has covered with you exactly where to go to catch your train.
