Christmas Market Tour 2012

Visit the home of Christmas tradition! This classic tour takes you to the most traditional Christmas markets in Bavaria - well known and not so well known. Sip hot wine with the locals and enjoy learning about the best German customs of the season!

We offer a small, personalized tour. Participation is limited to less than 25 people. This allows us to be flexible and respond to individual requests. You can enjoy the group activities (without feeling like you're in a 'tour' group), or we will help you to explore things on your own. By design, our tours cover less geography so that you don't spend all of your time in a bus.

Departure Day Friday 12/07/2012

Individually arranged flights depart North American in the later afternoon or early evening. Dinner and drinks on board.

Day 1 - Saturday 12/08/2012

Christmas Market Tour: Rothenburg/Tauber

We meet up at Munich airport and depart by 11:00 AM. The exact time will be set after we have received everyone's flight itinerary. We'll drive directly to our hotel in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the lovely Hotel Glocke.

Located next to the Plönlein Tower, you'll be transported back to the Middle Ages. Join in a fun tour of the city with Night Watchman after dining on the house specialty: Sauerbraten

Day 2 - Sunday 12/09/2012

Bamberg at Christmas time

Sleep in and enjoy a hearty breakfast in our hotel. Our local tour guide, Martin, will meet us at our hotel and take us for a walk around this walled medieval town. As Martin tells you about the history, you'll feel transported back to the Middle Ages.

After our tour, enjoy the small Christmas Market and the famous Christmas store of Käthe Wohlfahrt.

In the evening, we will enjoy another great franconian meal at Hotel Glocke. If there is interest among our group members, we can ask for a wine tasting. The owner makes his own wine from the Silvaner Grape of the region - he was even featured in a Rick Steves video. His passion for his craft is contagious - if you love wine, this is a memorable selection!

Day 3 - Monday 12/10/2012

Christmas market in Ulm, Germany

Awake to another traditional German breakfast, complete with fresh baked goods and strong, dark coffee. Our luggage will be transported to our next hotel in Bamberg, while we spend the day in the city of Nuremberg.

Nuremberg offers the largest of the Christmas Markets and it is filled with shoppers and holiday cheer - this is the place to sample some real delicacies: Nuremberg Lebkuchen/Gingerbread and Nuremberger bratwurst to name just two.

In addtion to the massive market, Nuremberg offers some great historical items to consider: We can visit the Nazi Party Rally grounds and Dokumentation Center or the Palace of Justice where the trials took place. Alternatively, you can explore the rich medieval history: The Albrecht Duerer Haus or the Nuremberg Castle.

We'll have dinner in Nuremberg and then board the train to Bamberg, less than an hour away.

Day 4 - Tuesday 12/11/2012

Altes Rathaus (former city hall) in Bamberg

Our favorite Bamberg guide, Eric the Storyteller, will meet us for breakfast and take us on a tour of his city. We visit the Bamberg Cathedral and its famous "Bamberg Knight" and Cathedral Square before visiting the heart of the city. Virtually untouched in WWII,  Bamberg maintains it status an UNESCO World Hertiage City.

Enjoy a free afternoon browsing the Chistmas Markets in Bamberg or opt for its famous 9 breweries - or a little of both!

This evening's dinner will be the famous Bamberg Stuff Onion at Schlenkerla. Enjoy with Bamberg's Rauchbier for a culinary treat.

Day 5 - Wednesday 12/12/2012

Kuchlbauer brewery with Hundertwasser tower

We'll leave Bamberg around 10:00 AM and will travel about 2 hours to the small town of Abensberg. Abensberg is a cute little town and is dominated by the most beautiful and unusual brewery in the world: Kuchlbauer.

After lunch at Kuchlbauer's main restaurant in the heart of town, we will visit the brewery. Usually the brewmaster himself takes us through the brewery. Kuchlbauer's owner, Herr Salleck, mixes his love of art with this love of brewing. In fact, he even has a new tower behind his brewery which was designed by the master, Hunderwasser and he has a copy of the Last Supper in one of his unused beer cellars.

A tasting session follows the tour and then well drive on to Regensburg. We'll check in at the Hotel zum fröhlichen Türken. Dinner is planned at Kneitinger am Arnulfsplatz - a great restaurant where its manager, Matthias, will ensure we are well provisioned.

Day 6 - Thursday 12/13/2012

Regensburg

After breakfast a city guide will meet with us and tell us about the rich history of Regensburg. You'll enjoy the stories from Roman times as well as from the middle ages as we tour this medieval city which survived the war.

Once our tour is complete, you'll feel comfortable navigating through the narrow, winding medieval alleyways in this well preserved UNESCO World Heritage City. Enjoy the Christmas Markets or visit the Palace of Thurn and Taxis. Since Regensburg is the home of the Händlmaier company, this is your chance to try their magical mustard and stock up at their factory outlet store in town.

Day 7 - Friday, 12/14/2012

Beatiful Munich at christmas time

After another hearty breakfast, our luggage will be transported directly to our hotel for us while we take the train to downtown Munich.

Once downtown, we'll enjoy Munich's famous Glockenspiel before a bit of free time to enjoy the open air market: Viktualienmarkt. Meeting back together after lunch, we'll walk through Munich's old town to highlight the history.

After the tour, you are free to enjoy the many Christmas markets that Munich has to offer. In addtion to the largest one at Marienplatz, there is a medieval market near Odeonsplatz, and many others scattered throughout the city. Or, opt for a visit to Munich's City Museum, the Residenz, or visit the concentration camp at Dachau. We will ensure you have a plan that appeals to your personal interests.

Dinner will be at the Augustiner Grossgaststaette in downtown Munich. Enjoy this famous Munich haunt and watch the outdoor skating nearby before returning to our hotel.

Day 8 - Saturday, 12/15/2012

Visting Munich Hofbräuhaus

You will love the 100% organic breakfast at the Alter Wirt - it's a buffet for all the senses!

After breakfast we will take the tram downtown an visit more of the sites in downtown Munich. Lunch is planned at the Weisses Brauhaus before turning you loose for an afternoon of free time. Again, we will offer you a schedule of highlights and special events: Listen to the band at the world famous Hofbräuhaus

Day 9 - Sunday 12/16/2012

Tour group in Bavaria

OPTION 1: Departure for Munich airport for return flights to the USA. Although the tour ends at the Alter Wirt in Grünwald, getting to the airport is easy. We will assist you in making your personal departure plans! Figure in a 60-90 minute travel time from our hotel to the airport when making your airline reservations

OPTION 2: Extend your trip and visit Kloster Andechs, Oberammergau, the royal castles near Füssen, and Salzburg.  For just  an extra $ 500 per person, double occupancy or $ 750 single occupancy, you can stay on with us through Dec 20. We will help you take the train back to Munich airport on Dec 20. Book an afternoon flight on Dec 20, or stay near the Munich Airport on 12/20 and fly back early on Dec 21.

If you to choose to extend... It's time to leave Munich after we enjoy our last organic breakfast at Alter Wirt. From Alter Wirt, we will travel due south towards the Alps. Our first destination is the famous Kloster Andechs , near Lake Ammer. This beautiful monastery is famous for its alpine views, Doppelbock bier, Schweinehaxe, and cheeses. Then we’ve planned a short stop in the village famous for the Passion Play: Oberammergau. Finally, we’ll take an afternoon break at Kloster Ettal near Garmisch before making our way over to Füssen. With a little luck the weather will be clear and we can take in the beauty of the royal castles lit up in the evening.

After checking in at Hotel Ruchti, we'll gather for a private dinner in at the hotel. Featuring the best Wiener Schnitzel in Bavaria, you're sure to enjoy the evening!

Day 10 – Monday 12/17/12

Awake to a traditional German breakfast, complete with fresh baked goods and strong, dark coffee. We leave at 9:15 for our tour of Ludwig II's famous castles, Neuschwanstein and its more traditional counterpart, Hohenschwangau. Enjoy the 40 minute hike up the hillside or opt for a horse drawn carriage. Both castles are stunning, but for different reasons - Hohenschwangau because it is more traditional and was used as a real residence. Neuschwanstein because of its "over the top" theatrical design. And, we'll discuss the tragic story of the misunderstood Ludwig II, his cousin, Sissy, and his brother, Otto. Rumor surrounds the king to this day: Was he mad, was he homosexual, in love with his cousin Sissy, and how did he die - suicide, murder, or an accident?

After the castles, we'll be dropped off in downtown Füssen. After a short orientation tour, enjoy the shopping in this quaint and inexpensive town. Back at Hotel Ruchti, if all goes according to plan, we'll have a traditional Bavarian Christmas Dinner: Goose with all the trimmings!

Day 11 - Tuesday 12/18/2011

After breakfast, it’s time to say good-bye to our friends in Füssen. We’ll board the 10:06 train to Salzburg (via Munich). After our 4 ½ hour ride across the beautiful Bavarian countryside, we’ll cross over to Austria. Once we’ve checked in, we’ll venture into Salzburg’s Old town for a brief orientation tour through Mozart’s city of birth. In the evening, we’ll go to the most traditional beer hall in Salzburg, the Augustiner zu Mülln. Since 1621 this has been a popular haunt for many and features a unique arcade of food stalls.

Day 12 - Wednesday 12/19/2012

Today is a great day to enjoy the city of Salzburg. After breakfast, we'll escort you downtown and complete the tour of this lovely city. Visit the Christmas Market, tour Mozart's birthplace, Mozart's Residence or ascend to the Hohensalzburg Fortress that overlooks the city. Or just enjoy exploring the many streets and alleyways in the old town.

We also hope to visit several other markets in the area. The Weihnachtsmarkt am Mirabell Platz Hellbrunner Adventzauber. Plus, we show you are favorite tips - Sacher Torte at Hotel Sacher, Handmade Mozart Balls at  Fürst, chocolate at Demel and sampling the schnapps at Sporer.

Or, if you are a die-hard Sound of Music fan, you can also use your day to enjoy a tour based on this classic film.

Since Salzburg is the City of Music, we will be looking for a place to listen to some great classical music this evening. Last year, we attended the Advent Concert in the Fortress – it was a memorable evening! (This may include an extra charge of up to 40 Euro per person).

Departure Day - Thursday 12/20/2012

We depart the Salzburg Station at 9:09 AM. After a quick switch at Munich Ost, you can be at the airport at 11:55 AM. There are options to depart early for an estimated 35 Euro per person (Earliest departure is 5:45 AM, Arrival at Munich airport at 8:15). If you wish to depart on Dec 21, we will assist you in securing a hotel near the airport (Price range 85 – 110 Euro for a Double Room)

Key Features

  • Experience the Christmas Markets as the locals do. Travel with a small group - not a traditional "tour group."
  • See the most famous cities and markets of Bavaria.
  • We use small, privately owned 3-star Bavarian Inns in quiet locations.
  • Price includes 2 meals per day, all lodging and ground transportation, & admission fees to events listed above.
  • This tour is suitable for all ages.  Family members under 18 are welcome!
  • Be aware that we do lots of walking each day. Many days will involve miles of walking spread out over the day, often over uneven paving stones. At the castles, there are long uphill climbs and many stairs inside. Also, you must be capable of handling your own luggage at the hotels. If the hotels do have elevators, they are small and slow. Not all hotels have elevators!

Tour Leaders:

This tour is led by Scott & Vonia Stephens and supported by our friends in Germany.

Vonia Stephens has traveled extensively throughout Bavaria for many years. She has spent summers in Füssen and Munich working on her German. Having spent many years in hospitality working at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, Vonia will ensure you have a successful and enjoyable trip. Her interests include anything to do with horses and hockey and reading about the royal families of Europe. For this tour, Vonia is the "Lead Shopper" and will ensure you find everything you're looking for.

Scott Stephens has lived and worked in Germany and speaks the laguage fluently. He loves to share his knowledge of the Bavarian Culture and share the history with his guests. During the Christmas tour, Scott sees to the needs of the non-shoppers - taking in the history or enjoying a beer with the locals, he'll be sure you have the experience you're after!
