The city of Munich has chosen the 2017 Oktoberfest motif. Purchasing a beer stein with the year’s design is one of the most popular souvenirs for Oktoberfest visitors. Since 1952 the city has held a competition to decide each year’s special design which goes on all advertising and souvenirs for the year.
This year there were 143 entries from professional graphic designers, students, and artists. 48 of the submissions were posted on-line for public voting – the first time the city has involved the public and over 30,000 votes were recorded. On Tuesday evening, a jury of Oktoberfest vendors, advertising experts, and city officials met to determine a winner. This year’s winner comes from two Franconian design students and they are awarded €2,500 – and lots of attention since their design will be printed on 25 different products which bring in an estimated €100,000.
