On the last Saturday of each year, the Spielmanzug Drum and Bugle Corp hosts a great event in Milwaukee's Hart Park. The Alte Kameraden Brass Band plays the entire night and there is plenty of German food and Beer.
This year we kicked off our Milwaukee weekend with a private dinner at the Milwaukee Athletic Club. Chef Sepp Zimmermann, originally from Bavaria's Bad Reichenhall, made a fabulous Bavarian Dinner for us: Schweinebraten with Semmelknödel was every bit as good as in Bavaria and the freshly made Apple Strudel might be the best I've ever had! After dinner Chef Sepp was nice enough to share some quality German Schnapps with us and we watched German Videos and reviewed a slideshow from our last trip together.
Although the guest rooms at the club are a bit dated (especially the bathroom) the public rooms, the exercise facilities, and friendly staff are the keys to this place. With it's funky old-school charm, the MAC is like stepping back in time - I highly recommend it, especially if you have time for a work out.
Several of us started our Saturday morning with some time in the gym. Then we donned our Lederhosen and strolled to the Old German Beer Hall. We opened the place at 11:00 AM on the dot. Usually a Weissbier goes for $6.50 here, but wearing Tracht earns you a hefty 50% discount on the beer price. After a quick 2 1/2 hours here, we walked over to Karl Ratzsch's for a hearty German Meal. I had the Duck, which was fabulous. Next, it was a quick nap and then on to the festival at Hart Park.
We arrived at the fest just as the doors opened and we claimed our seats and filled our mugs with Hofbraeu Maibock. The placed filled up quickly and the room was filled with great energy. Everyone seemed really happy to be there and eager to celebrate. We event meet some great people and had a phenomenal time. After the event shut down at 11:00, our shuttle bus returned from the MAC to get us and dropped us back at the Old German Beer Hall. Pushing midnight, the place was packed predominately with younger people and we were inundate with photo requests. It was a fun finish to a great weekend!
